Himachal honours its Asiad, CWG medallists

SHIMLA - Himachal Pradesh Tuesday gave cash awards totalling Rs.57 lakh to four shooters from the state who won medals at last year’s Guangzhou Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Delhi, a statement said here.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal gave cash awards to Vijay Kumar, Samresh Jang, Meena Kumar and Sonia Rai at a state-level statehood day function held at Hamirpur town, some 175 km from here.

Vijay Kumar got a cash prize of Rs.41 lakh for winning three gold and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and two bronze medals at the Asiad, while Samresh Jung got Rs.8 lakh for winning a silver and a bronze at the CWG.

Meena Kumari was given a cash award of Rs.3 lakh for bagging a bronze at the CWG and Sonia Rai received Rs.5 lakh for winning a silver at the Asian Games.

The state government had announced that the sportspersons from the state who won a gold medal at any international event would get Rs.10 lakh, while silver and bronze medallists will receive Rs.5 lakh and Rs.3 lakh, respectively.
