Pirates place rookie Veal on DL
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed rookie left-handed reliever Donnie Veal on the 15-day disabled list due to a right groin strain.
The team said on Sunday that Veal was injured while pitching against the Houston Astros on Friday. The move is retroactive to Saturday.
The Pirates said they will announce a corresponding roster move on Monday.
Pittsburgh took the 24-year-old Veal in the Rule 5 Draft from the Chicago Cubs. He had appeared in only five of the team’s first 48 games and went 21 days between his two most recent appearances.
He was 0-0 with a 4.26 ERA with 10 walks and six strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings.
