Suzuki’s hit streak reaches 27 games

SEATTLE — Ichiro Suzuki has extended his Mariners record by hitting safely in his 27th consecutive game.

Suzuki grounded a single through the right side of the Baltimore Orioles’ infield in the third inning Wednesday night.

He is now three games shy of the major leagues’ longest hitting streak this season, by Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman. That ended on May 12.

Suzuki was batting .402 (47 for 117) during the streak after his single off Brad Bergesen.

This is his seventh hitting streak of at least 20 games since the five-time major league hits leader arrived in Seattle for the 2001 season. That ties him with George Sisler for the fourth most 20-plus game hitting streaks. Willie Keeler, Ty Cobb and Pete Rose had eight.
