Wellemeyer shuts down Giants, 5-0

ST. LOUIS — Todd Wellemeyer rebounded from his shortest start of the season to combine with three others on a shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 5-0 on Thursday nights.

Wellemeyer (7-7) allowed two runs over 7 1-3 innings in besting San Francisco left-hander Barry Zito. Wellemeyer lasted 2 1-3 innings in his previous start, giving up three earned runs against Minnesota on June 27. He was 1-3 with a 6.89 ERA in June.

Ryan Franklin worked a perfect ninth for his 19th save in 20 chances.

Zito (4-8) went 4 1-3 innings, allowing five earned runs and five hits.

The Cardinals won for the third time in nine games.
