Diamondbacks rally for 11-7 win over Rockies

DENVER — Pinch-hitter Chris Young hit a tiebreaking, three-run double in the eighth inning, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks rally for an 11-7 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

Stephen Drew finished a single shy of the cycle and Mark Reynolds hit a solo homer as the Diamondbacks snapped a three-game skid.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the eighth, Arizona scored six times to open up a big lead — and then had to hang on.

The Diamondbacks tied the game at 4 when Gerardo Parra laced a one-out double into the left-center gap that scored Miguel Montero.

After Chad Tracy and Felipe Lopez walked, Young cleared the bases with a deep double off reliever Joel Peralta (0-2).

Drew then followed with a two-run homer, his third hit of the night to go along with a walk and a flyout.

The Rockies rallied in their half of the eighth, scoring three times with two outs as Seth Smith had a two-run single and Dexter Fowler followed with an RBI single to left.

With two on, Chad Qualls was brought in and got Clint Barmes to line out to Drew. Qualls then pitched the ninth for his first save since June 11. He’s now converted 14 of 18 chances.

Lopez gave Qualls a little more wiggle room in the ninth with a two-run single.

Scott Schoeneweis (1-0) earned the win simply by striking out Todd Helton with a runner on second in the seventh.

The Diamondbacks shuffled around their lineup Saturday, trying to ignite an offense that’s recently struggled to score.

The change worked as Arizona collected 14 hits.

The night before, Reynolds ranted about the Diamondbacks’ lackluster play following a sloppy 5-0 loss.

His words may have woke his team up, but his actions spoke even louder as he hit a solo homer in the fourth. It was his 23rd of the season.

“People in this clubhouse who heard what I said know exactly what I mean and know exactly my thoughts and feelings behind it,” he said before the game.

Aaron Cook gave up nine hits and three runs — two earned — in five innings. The righty pitched into the sixth before leaving when he had the wind knocked out of him diving for Parra’s grounder.

After snaring the ball, Cook belly flopped onto the grass. He quickly got up to his knees only to throw wide of Helton, the ball caroming down the first-base line and allowing Parra to advance to third.

The Rockies trainers came out and Cook was removed. Parra scored on Tracy’s groundout.

Barmes had a solo homer and an RBI double for the Rockies, who had their six-game home winning streak snapped. Ian Stewart added a two-run double.

Yusmeiro Petit was activated from the disabled list before the game after being out since May 9 with a strained right shoulder. The right-handed Petit pitched just three innings, giving up four runs, before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the fourth.

NOTES: Rockies reliever Manuel Corpas (right elbow bone spurs) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday. … To make room for Petit on the roster, Arizona optioned Ryan Roberts to Triple-A Reno. … For the second straight night, the game was sent into a rain delay by an afternoon thunderstorm. The contest was delayed 27 minutes.
