Diamondbacks rally back for 4-3 win over Rockies

DENVER — Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Felipe Lopez broke a tie game with an RBI single in the seventh, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

It’s the second straight game the Diamondbacks rallied late for the victory, and gives them their first series win since mid June at Kansas City.

Dan Haren (8-5) allowed three runs — one earned — before being taken out in the seventh for a pinch hitter. The three runs allowed were his most since May 23 at Oakland.

The right hander scattered seven hits and struck out six on the day he was named to his third straight All-Star team.

Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo homer while Ryan Spilborghs and Todd Helton added RBI singles for Colorado, who lost two straight at Coors Field for the first time since Jim Tracy replaced Clint Hurdle as manager in late May.

Ubaldo Jimenez (6-8) had been dynamite against the Diamondbacks of late, throwing 19 scoreless innings dating back to last season.

But Reynolds wrecked that string in the sixth with a three-run homer. Jimenez got two quick outs before walking Alex Romero and Stephen Drew, setting the stage for Reynolds’ towering shot to left.

Jon Rauch, Scott Schoeneweis and Tony Pena bridge the gap to closer Chad Qualls, who pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 19 chances.

It was the first hit that Jimenez allowed in the game.

After that, the wheels fell off. Jimenez was pulled following Lopez’s go-ahead single in the seventh. The right-hander gave up four runs, four hits and walked five while striking out eight.

Maybe the homer will gain Reynolds a few more clicks on the Internet?

He was left off the All-Star team Sunday, but is competing for one final spot with four other NL players in online voting.

Jimenez helped himself at the plate by starting a two-out, two-run rally in the third as he dribbled a chopper just out of Haren’s reach for an infield hit. Seth Smith reached on Chad Tracy’s error and Spilborghs singled Jimenez home from third with a liner off Haren’s glove.

Helton followed with a single to right, and Smith was able to sneak in under the tag of catcher Miguel Montero, despite the throw beating him to the plate.

The Rockies have now scored 168 runs this season with two outs, which is tops in the majors.

Yorvit Torrealba made his return to the lineup Sunday after missing time to attend to matters involving the kidnapping and safe recovery of his son, 11-year-old Yorvit Eduardo, and other family members in Venezuela.

The catcher left the team on June 2 to join his wife in Venezuela. A day later, they were left along a highway outside Caracas.

His wife and son are now safely with him in Denver.

Torrealba received a round of applause from the Coors Field fans before his first at bat. He went 1-for-4 with a double.

The Rockies will be represented at the All-Star game by outfielder Brad Hawpe and pitcher Jason Marquis. Both players are making their first appearance.
