60-ft dollar sign burned into NY school ballfield

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — A 60-foot-long dollar sign has been burned into the synthetic turf at a Long Island high school football field.

A five-page letter left on the field and mailed to local newspapers complains about how schools spend tax dollars.

The typed letter defends the vandalism, saying the cost of the damage to the football field “would seem small” compared to the amount the school district would save if taxpayers oversaw its budget.

Superintendent Ray Gualtieri says all school district expenses were approved by voters.

East Hampton High School administrators say the damage could cost $100,000 to repair.

Police say they’re investigating the vandalism, which was discovered last week.
