Quentin, Getz lead Chisox
CHICAGO — The White Sox made a big trade. Then they got a big win.
Carlos Quentin homered and had a go-ahead RBI double and Chris Getz delivered a two-run, bases-loaded single Friday night as the White Sox beat the New York Yankees 10-5.
The White Sox’s second straight victory over the AL East leaders came hours after they acquired star right-hander Jake Peavy in a trade with the San Diego Padres. Peavy, on the disabled list with an ankle injury, is not expected to pitch until late August. He will join the team Saturday.
Chicago broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth on Quentin’s RBI double off David Robertson (1-1). The White Sox added four in the seventh off Alfredo Aceves. Getz hit the two-out single, Jayson Nix stole home on a double steal after Getz broke from first, and Scott Podsednik added a hard-hop RBI single with Getz racing home from second.
Tony Pena (1-0), acquired from the Diamondbacks earlier this month, got his first victory for the White Sox with two innings of scoreless relief.
D.J. Carrasco, pressed into his first start of the season when the White Sox traded Clayton Richard in the Peavy deal before the game, gave up three quick runs in the first.
Derek Jeter grounded to first but beat Carrasco to the bag for an infield single, Johnny Damon singled and Teixeira followed with an RBI double to right center. After Alex Rodriguez hit an RBI grounder, Teixeira scored when Hideki Matsui hit a single past Getz with the infield playing in.
Yankees starter Sergio Mitre gave up three two-out hits in the first and a run on singles by Jim Thome and Paul Konerko and an RBI double by A.J. Pierzynski.
Gordon Beckham hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Jim Thome followed with a two-run single, putting the White Sox ahead 4-3 in the second. Quentin hit his 10th homer for a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third.
Eric Hinske, who hadn’t played in the previous seven games, hit a two-run homer to tie it in the fourth.
Mitre went three innings, giving up seven hits and five runs. Carrasco lasted four, yielding nine hits and five runs.
NOTES: Yankees left fielder Johnny Damon made a spectacular catch of Quentin’s liner in the seventh. Damon reached up and snagged the liner before his momentum caused him to hit the wall front first. He still managed to hang onto the ball. … Podsednik’s bunt single broke an 0-for-16 slump. … The Yankees expect to have newly acquired Jerry Hairston Jr. in uniform for Saturday’s game. … Carrasco’s start was his first since September, 2005 when he was pitching for Kansas City. … Pierzynski had four hits.
