TAMPA, Fla. — New York Yankees right-hander Ian Kennedy, still recovering from an aneurysm this year, threw 25 pitches off a mini-mound Tuesday and hopes to play in minor league games before the season ends.

Kennedy had surgery May 12 to remove the aneurysm from beneath his right biceps. He will have another session Friday on a mound half the usual 10-inch height.

“Another hurdle cleared,” Kennedy said. “I felt really good. I’m happy with that. I’m happy with the progress. I’m still on schedule and haven’t had any problems yet. “

The 24-year-old Kennedy was pitching for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season when he experienced numbness in his pitching hand.

“I saw the doctor last week, and he’s real happy with all my tests and the results,” Kennedy said. “It’s been going really well.”

Kennedy plans to pitch in the Puerto Rico winter league. He went 0-4 with a 8.17 ERA for the Yankees last year.

His surgery was performed by Dr. George Todd, who operated on former Yankees pitcher and current team broadcaster David Cone’s aneurysm in 1996.
