Brown holds off Rhode Island 28-20

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Kyle Newhall threw three touchdown passes as Brown held off Rhode Island 28-20 on Saturday for the Bears’ first win of the season.

Newhall was 14-for-26 with 170 yards and three interceptions for the Bears (1-2), and Buddy Farnham had five catches for 100 yards and two scores.

After Anthony Ferrer’s 68-yard run put the Rams (1-3) ahead 7-0, Newhall’s first touchdown pass to Farnham, a 32-yarder, pulled Brown with 7-6 midway through the first quarter.

Rob Damon picked off Newhall and returned it for a 75-yard score early in the second to give the Rams a 14-6 lead.

But Newhall found Farnham again, this time on a 42-yard completion, and then connected with Trevan Samp on the 2-point conversion for a 14-14 tie at halftime.

In the third, Bobby Sewall caught a 13-yard TD pass from Newhall and ran for a 5-yard score to make it 28-14.
