Hackworth’s touchdown lifts Charleston Southern to 31-21 win over Virginia Military Institute

Charleston Southern beats VMI 31-21

LEXINGTON, Va. — Charleston Southern scored 10 points in the final 6 minutes, capped by B.J. Hackworth’s 12-yard run, to beat Virginia Military Institute 31-21 on Saturday.

With the game tied 21-21 after three quarters, the Buccaneers (3-5, 1-2 Big South) took the lead on an 18-yard field goal by John Paglia. On VMI’s next possession, Andrew McKain intercepted a pass from Kyle Hughes that set up the Buccaneers at the Keydets’ 24-yard line. Hackworth scored two plays later.

Antwan Ivey scored on a 2-yard run and a 50-yard punt return for the Buccaneers. A.J. Toscano scored on a 6-yard run and went 19-for-24 for 193 yards passing.

Howard Abegesah ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for the Keydets (2-6, 1-3).

Hughes rushed for 89 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown. He went 4-for-10 for 55 yards passing.
