Weis hopes next Notre Dame coach has more success
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Fired Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis says he hopes the coach who follows him will be more successful than he was.
Weis spoke to the South Bend Tribune on Saturday and several other local media outlets that he invited.
He says he knew his job was in jeopardy after a 23-21 loss to Navy on Nov. 7 dropped the team to 6-3. He adds that he felt he had time to recover but knew the double overtime loss to Connecticut two weeks later sealed his fate.
He says he talked with athletic director Jack Swarbrick two days after the UConn loss. He says he didn’t tell his assistant coaches because he thought it would distract them from getting ready for the Stanford game, which the Irish lost.
Swarbrick announced Weis’ dismissal Monday.
