Concussion awareness grabbing hold across the NFL

MIAMI — New Orleans defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove has endured plenty of concussions. The exact number, that’s a mystery, even to him.

For years, that was consistent with the thinking around much of the NFL, perhaps around football in general.

This season, concussions and their aftereffects have become a theme across the league. The once-taboo topic was brought forward after the league adopted new policies about player clearance, measures by various states to regulate the issue, even involvement by Congress.

In the buildup to the Super Bowl, they’ve been a talking point again, signs of far more awareness about the issue than ever before.
