Vikings draft Stanford running back Toby Gerhart
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings have taken Stanford running back Toby Gerhart in the second round of the NFL draft.
The Vikings selected Gerhart with the 51st overall pick. They acquired it in a trade with the Houston Texans, sending their second-rounder at No. 62 and third-rounder at No. 93 to move up 11 spots and snag Gerhart.
The 6-foot, 231-pound Gerhart was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and the winner of the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back after a standout senior season at Stanford. He’s a powerful back who rushed for 1,871 yards and 28 touchdowns last year and led the Cardinal to their first bowl game in eight seasons.
Earlier in the second round, the Vikings drafted Virginia cornerback Chris Cook with the No. 34 overall selection.
