Ernie Harwell Dies

DETROIT (GaeaTimes.com)- Ernie Harwell, the well known sportscaster who is best known as the voice of Detroit Tigers died on Tuesday evening ultimately bringing to an end his battle with cancer. The veteran broadcaster had been diagnosed with the cancer of the bile duct few months back and since then had been undergoing treatment. Ernie Harwell, who was 92 during his demise, breathed his last at his home at the Detroit suburb of Novi. The noted broadcaster is survived by his wife, his two sons as well as twin daughters.

The news that Ernie Harwell has passed away was declared by the Detroit Tigers, with whom the celebrated broadcaster had spent 42 years of his broadcasting career which lasted for 55 illustrious years. For years, generations of baseball fans were captivated by Ernie Harwell’s rich baritone and quirky phrases on radio that became his trademark. The much acclaimed sportscaster hailed from the generation of announcers who commenced their broadcasting careers with radio much before the ascent of television.

Therefore it hardly comes as a surprise that the death of such an esteemed sportscaster has sent shock waves across the sports as well as broadcasting fraternity. While reacting to the demise of Ernie Harwell, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig described the broadcaster as the voice of Detroit Tigers as well as a legendary announcer who represented the national pastime to his listeners spanning across generations. Ernie Harwell, who received multiple awards for his iconic career, was honored with the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award way back in the year 1981.
