NEW DELHI - New Zealand capitalized on defensive lapses to trounce Malaysia 5-0 and record their second consecutive victory in pool B of the womens hockey competition in the 19th Commonwealth Games here Tuesday.

Malaysia, who had won their opening game against Canada 3-2, did well to resist the Kiwis for 33 minutes when a defensive error helped the Black Sticks to score through Anita Punt who capped a right-wing move.

A minute later came the second goal when skipper Kayla Sharland scored from a penalty corner and the Kiwis, who had beaten Wales 5-1 in their opening game, crossed over with a 2-0 advantage.

On resumption, the Kiwis struck thrice more through Anna Thorpe (42nd), Charlotte Harrison (45th) and Samantha Harrison (60th) to snuff out the Malaysians.

The Kiwis were happy to chalk up their second win, and, with two more games to be played, they improved their chances of making the semi-finals.

We still need to play England and Canada. Both will be tough matches, observed Kiwi coach Mark Hager and asserted that the focus would be on their next game against England.
