NEW DELHI - New Zealand held Canada 1-1 and the lone point carried them into the semi-final of the mens hockey competition at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

New Zealand, who needed only a draw to join England in the semi-finals from pool B, were stunned in the 19th minute by Canadian Sukhwinder Singh who put home a Matthew Guest return pass.

The Kiwis repeatedly ran into a wall before they got the crucial 67th minute equalizer from Hayden Shaw.

Shaw found the net with the fifth penalty corner, just three minutes from the end, to leave the Canadians distraught and out of the last four.

The Canadians thus missed a great chance to reach the medal rounds of a major international tournament.

The Kiwis finished second with seven points behind England (10) while Canada ended fourth in the group.
