CWG table tennis: Soumyadeep shocks Henzell, India women out

NEW DELHI - India’s Soumyadeep Roy, Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj moved into the quarterfinals of the men’s singles while women’s challenge ended in the table tennis event at the Commonwealth Games Monday.

Mouma Das and Madhurika Patkar lost their round of 16 matches at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

Roy got past last edition’s runner-up William Henzell of Australia 12-10, 4-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-7 in a thrilling decider and entered the last eight for the first time in two Games appearances.

“It was a close match. I beat him earlier as well. I feel fit now after undergoing a knee surgery last year,” Roy told IANS.

Amalraj beat Marios Yiangou of Cyprus 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-6, 8-11, 9-11, 11-7 in a match that went to the wire.

Defensive player Abhishek gave England number one Drinkhall a hard time but eventually lost the match 9-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-4, 3-11, 11-8, 6-11 in another match that went all the way to the decider.

Defending champion and second seed Sharath Kamal dropped a game against Gavin Rumgay

of Scotland before winning 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6 in the last pre-quarterfinal of the day.

Earlier, Madhurika Patkar was the only one amongst the Indian women to put up some fight against the mighty Singapore players. She managed to snatch two games from world no. 3 Tianwei Feng but eventually lost 5-11, 11-3, 2-11, 12-10, 2-11, 7-11.

Mouma was the only other Indian to have reached the pre-quarterfinals stage but proved no match for 25th-ranked Mengu Yu. She lost 3-11, 5-11, 4-11, 3-11 in straight sets.

The men’s quarterfinals will be played Tuesday.
