MELBOURNE - Argentine Gisela Dulko and her Italian partner Flavia Pennetta won the women’s doubles title of the Australian Open by defeating Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko on Friday.
The top ranked pair fought back from a set down and survived match points to beat the 12th seed Russians 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, in two hours and 11 minutes at Melbourne Park, the BBC reports.
Dulko and Pennetta struggled in the first set and trailed 5-4 in the second, but powered back in the decider.
The win means Dulko remains the world’s top-ranked doubles player, while Pennetta stays second.
The World No.1 doubles combination had won seven titles last year, including a 17-match winning streak and quarter-final appearances in all four Grand Slams in 2010. (ANI)
