BRISBANE - Australia defeated England by 51 runs in the fifth ODI played in Brisbane on Sunday to seal the seven-match series 4-1 with two matches to spare.

England never really challenged Australia’s total of 249, with captain Andrew Strauss (three), wicketkeeper Matt Prior (14) and Jonathan Trott (0) being dismissed early.

Kevin Pietersen (40) and Ian Bell (36) were able to rally in a steadying 73-run stand, but left too many runs for the lower order to overhaul the total.

Paul Collingwood (18), James Anderson (20 not out) and Steve Finn (35) hung around, but only struggled to 198 all out in their reply, the BBC reported.

Earlier in the day, stand-in captain Michael Clarke top scored for Australia, posting an under-pressure 54, while Brad Haddin (37), David Hussey (34) and Shane Watson (16) all looked in great form, but were unable to push on to a big score having made a start.

England fast bowler Chris Woakes, playing in just his second ODI, took 6-45 from 10 overs in a standout performance for the visitors. (ANI)
