MELBOURNE - Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman is pregnant with her first child but her pregnancy has triggered type 2 diabetes for the sports star.

“I am so totally lost in love with this baby already. I think it will take my breath away when we first meet,” the Age quoted her as saying.

Freeman also spoke about the moment she and funds manager James Murch, whom she married in 2009, first saw their baby.

“I was totally overwhelmed when I saw the ultrasound,” she said.

Freeman said she would have to test her blood-sugar levels and inject herself with insulin four times a day to manage her diabetes, which runs in her family.

“It came as a jolt at first. Being an elite athlete I was really healthy, and I was really fit - I was one of the fittest women in the world. And then all of a sudden your body is disappointing you, in a way. And it’s like your pride gets hurt,” she said.

“They say I have type 2 diabetes but there is a chance it could go away after the baby’s born. So we’ll just wait and see.” (ANI)
