ATHENS - Greece captain Giorgos Karagounisk got his wish to be drawn with Argentina in Group B for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
Karagounis’ enthusiasm was immediately picked up by newspapers on Saturday who made references to Argentina manager Diego Maradona.
“Don’t cry for us Diego,” read the headline for Ethnos Sports, while Sport Day’s front page screamed “Where are you going Diego.”
“It is not deja vu that Greece was drawn in the same group as Argentina - as was the case in 1994 - it is an opportunity,” said the Sports Day Article.
Greece also face Nigeria like in 1994 as well as South Korea.
In an interview with sports newspaper “Exedra,” Karagounis said that their first game against South Korea will be extremely important.
“From our side we are willing to give our best and I think that we can make it if we are all right. Our opening match against Korea is the most decisive one because they are fast…
“If we win it, then we will show what we can do,” he said, adding that “Nigeria on the other hand are improving every time they reach the World Cup finals.”
“Argentina is the big favourite, not just to win the group but also to fight for the trophy until the end,” said Karagounis.
