Utah State renames field after Merlin Olsen
LOGAN, Utah — The playing field inside Utah State’s Romney Stadium will be renamed Merlin Olsen Field in honor of the former NFL player and USU standout.
University president Stan Albrecht and athletic director Scott Barnes made the announcement Saturday in a halftime ceremony during the Aggies’ basketball game against St. Mary’s.
Barnes says a sculpture of Olsen will be unveiled in a plaza south of the stadium during an official dedication ceremony in fall 2010.
Olsen did not speak but released a prepared statement saying he and his family are pleased and excited about the honor.
The Los Angeles Rams picked Olsen third overall in the 1962 NFL draft. He was named to a record 14 Pro Bowls and was a member of the Rams’ so-called Fearsome Foursome.
