Massachusetts defeats Grambling State 81-58
AMHERST, Mass. — Terrell Vinson scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help Massachusetts beat Grambling State 81-58 on Friday night.
Vinson became the first UMass freshman to tally a double-double since Rashaun Freeman in 2004.
Playing without top scorer Ricky Harris (17.7 points per game), who suffered a right ankle sprain in Thursday’s practice, the Minutemen (5-5) used a strong inside game to win their fourth straight at home.
UMass outrebounded the Tigers 55-30, scored 56 points in the paint and scored 28 second-chance points, compared to four by Grambling State (1-5).
Gary Correia and Sampson Carter scored 11 points each and Javon Farrell added 10 rebounds for the Minutemen.
UMass led by as many as 27, 69-42 on a Sean Carter dunk with 5:56 to go.
George Akpele, Torez Young and Lance Fuertado scored 11 points each for the Tigers, who lost their fourth straight.
