Late shot lifts UMass to 78-76 win over Fordham

AMHERST, Mass. — Ricky Harris scored on a jumper with 2.9 seconds left to lead Massachusetts to a 78-76 victory over Fordham on Wednesday night.

Harris finished with 21 points and the Minutemen (7-7, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) withstood Fordham’s rally from a 13-point deficit.

UMass led 76-71 with 50 seconds left, but Chris Gaston was fouled while hitting a layup to cut the lead to 76-73 with 40 seconds left. He missed the free throw attempt, but Khiry Gordon got the rebound and Brenton Butler hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 76 with 36 seconds remaining.

The Minutemen held for the final shot before Harris drove, pulled up at the free throw line and banked in a jumper.

Anthony Gurley added 15 points for UMass.

Butler led Fordham (2-11, 0-1), which has lost six straight, with 31 points. Gaston had 16 points and 14 rebounds and Lance Brown scored 11 points.
