McCarthy stepping down as coach at East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. — East Carolina coach Mack McCarthy will step down as coach after the Conference USA tournament to take a fundraising job in the school’s athletics department.
The school announced McCarthy’s decision on Saturday, after the Pirates’ final regular-season game against Southern Mississippi. His new job will focus on helping to build an on-campus basketball practice facility.
McCarthy has a 34-56 record since the 2007-08 season, when he spent a year as acting head coach before getting the permanent job at the end of the year. McCarthy has a 342-233 coaching record with previous stops at Virginia Commonwealth and Chattanooga, and has three years left on a five-year deal.
East Carolina is 10-20 this season.
