Delaware State slips past Bethune-Cookman 57-55
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Frisco Sandige scored 15 points and Delaware held off a second-half rally to beat Bethune-Cookman 57-55 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday night.
Second-seeded Delaware State led 43-24 with 15:45 to play, but was outscored 31-14 the rest of the way. The seventh-seeded Wildcats made a 14-2 run to pull within 45-38 with 10:21 remaining, then went on a 9-3 run over the final 2:47 for the final margin.
Two free throws by the Wildcats’ CJ Reed trimmed the lead to 57-55 with 8 seconds remaining, and Stanley Elliott missed a layup at the buzzer for the tie.
Jay Threatt added 14 points and Marcus Neal 13 for the Hornets (17-11), who will face the winner of South Carolina State-Maryland Eastern Shore in Friday’s semifinals.
Alexander Starling and Elliott each had 15 for the Wildcats (17-16). Reed added 11 and Albert Abrahams 10.
