Volstad pitches Marlins past Nationals 9-5

JUPITER, Fla. — Chris Volstad pitched 6 2-3 innings in his best start of the spring and added three hits and 2 RBI in the Florida Marlins 9-5 over the Washington Nationals.

Volstad, who’s expected to be the Marlins’ No. 4 starter, struggled this spring with his sinker ball. But he has made progress in the last two starts

After the game, the team sent right-handers Rick VandenHurk and Tim Wood to Triple-A New Orleans, leaving right-hander Clay Hensley with the final bullpen spot.

Nationals right-hander Garrett Mock, trying to win a rotation spot, allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
