Southern Miss ousts Jacksonville State
AUBURN, Ala. — Taylor Walker, Adam Doleac and B.A. Vollmuth each hit three-run homers and drove in at least four runs to help Southern Miss stay alive in the NCAA regionals with a 19-6 rout of Jacksonville State on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (36-23) scored multiple runs in six innings to eliminate the Gamecocks (32-26).
Walker went 4 for 4 with four runs, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Vollmuth’s three hits included a blast over the centerfield scoreboard in the seventh, and he drove in five runs. Leadoff man Kameron Brunty scored five times.
The game appeared headed for a shootout after Southern Miss led 7-5 two innings into it, but the Golden Eagles turned to closer Collin Cargill early. Cargill (4-2) pitched the final 7 2-3 innings, struck out nine and gave up one run and seven hits.
