O’Connell fans 9 as Fullerton tops Minnesota 7-2

FULLERTON, Calif. — Colin O’Connell struck out a career-high nine as Cal State Fullerton avoided elimination by beating Minnesota 7-2 on Sunday night in Fullerton Regional.

The Titans (44-16), who have won 26 of 29, and the Golden Gophers (32-29) will meet Monday night for a berth in the super regionals against UCLA.

O’Connell retired 13 batters in a row from the second through the sixth innings, induced 11 groundouts and allowed one walk and an unearned run for his first victory.

Fullerton’s Corey Jones hit a two-run homer, Nick Ramirez added a solo homer and Billy Marcoe had three hits. The Titans also stole five bases, with Carlos Lopez stealing home on a double steal.

Kyle Knudson and A.J. Pettersen each had two of Minnesota’s seven hits.

The Titans displayed TRUE GRIT yesterday!!! It was brilliant to watch.

I understand that Carl Spackler (aka Bill Murray in Caddyshack) has offered up his tips on how to spectacularly dispatch gophers.

LET’S GO TITANS!!!!!
