Youth Olympics: Prannoy lone Indian to shine on first day

SINGAPORE - India’s Sunil Kumar Prannoy won his badminton group matches while the basketball team lost to Puerto Rico on the first day of the Youth Olympics here Sunday.
The day started on a good note for India with Prannoy registering a 21-15, 21-14 victory over Lucas Claerbout of France in Pool C of the preliminary stages of the boys singles badminton.
Prannoy returned to the courts in the evening to post another comfortable 21-9, 21-10 win over Dennis Coke of Jamaica. He now tops Pool C.
Sairaneeth Bhamidipati, however, went down fighting to Singapore’s Chao Huang 12-21, 21-18, 17-21 in a tough Pool H match lasting 48 mins.
The Indian boys basketball team had a bad start to the tournament losing 15-33 to Puerto Rico in a Group A match.
In rowing pairs event, Indian boys Yasin Khan and Gurpreet Singh finished fifth in heat one and failed to qualify for the next stage. The girls pair of Thomas Nimmy and Mitali Sekhar finished fourth in heat one and are also out of the competition.
Weightlifter Matsa Santoshi finished fifth in the girls’ 48kg final with a total lift of 150 kg (65+85). Chinese Tian Yuan won the gold (85+105).
India are being represented by 32 athletes in the competition, which is meant for the 14-18 age group.
