NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- Former New Jersey Nets player Jayson Williams was sentenced to an additional year in prison on Friday after he was pleaded guilty in the drunken driving case which happened in the month of January this year in which the basketball player crashed his Mercedes-Benz SUV against a tree near a Manhattan highway. The National Basketball League player is currently serving a five year sentence for accidentally killing a limo driver with a 12-gauge shotgun.
During his appearance in the Manhattan court on Friday, Jayson Williams told Judge Rita Mella that he was indeed under the influence of alcohol during the January 5 incident when his car slammed into the tree. The 42-year-old former player further went on to express his apology to his family and also revealed that he was really trying his level best to rebuild his life as he was pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor count and was sentenced to the maximum term that the charge entitles. Dressed in a tan prison jumpsuit, Jayson Williams said to the court that although the one year prison sentence seems excessive, it would surely be a small price to pay in order to deter drunken driving.
Jayson Williams, who is known to have been associated with the New Jersey Nets as well as the Philadelphia 76ers during his NBA career, had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood after he was taken to a nearby hospital following the car crash. Meanwhile, in addition to the extended prison sentence, Jayson Williams would also have to pay a restitution of $16,000 for damaging the tree.
