NEW DELHI - Cheaper international call rates offered by the mobile store at the Commonwealth Games Village are attracting many foreign athletes and delegates. Over 700 of them have bought local SIM cards to talk with family and friends back home.

In a special offer, they get a connection and talk time of Rs.300 on paying the same amount.

“The Aircel SIM card has the international calling card and charges are very nominal,” store manager Gurpreet Singh told IANS.

The call rates for US and Canada are as low as Re.1 per minute while call rates for African countries and Britain are 17 paise per second.

The rates otherwise for US, Canada and Britain are around Rs.16 per minute.

“We have sold over 700 prepaid SIMs. We take a copy of passport, accreditation card and a letter from team manager before issuing the SIM cards,” Singh said.

“We have asked the players to destroy their SIM cards before leaving India,” he added.

The players at the Village are appreciating the services.

“I never imagined that calling back home will be so cheap. I have been regularly in touch with my family members. I have told them that I will call them as it is cheap,” said Brittany Teev, a tennis player from Cook Islands.
