LONDON - Manchester United boss has called defender Nemanja Vidic a warrior, as the skipper marks the fifth anniversary of his debut at Old Trafford this week.

The United boss spent around seven million pounds to buy the Serbian from Spartak Moscow in January 2006.

Ferguson said it is one of the best pieces of business he has done in his 24 years in charge.

“He and Patrice found it difficult to settle in the first six months and it took them a while. That happens to some players coming into the English game. But Nemanja is a warrior, he’s a natural defender and he loves defending,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“There have been a few defenders like him over the years and, when the ball comes into the penalty box, you know that the one who wants to get it clear will be Nemanja,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson was delighted with the way Vidic marshalled his defence in the goalless draw against Tottenham last weekend.

He said: “Nemanja was so powerful and positive in everything he went for. Tottenham didn’t get any shots on goal really. We handled it really well, all the things they could throw at us.”

Admitting that Vidic had been a bargain buy, Ferguson said: “Well, he has been a great signing. I can’t remember what we paid for him, but whatever it was, he was cheap.”

While Vidic has proved his worthiness, Ferguson said he is shocked by the valuations of players in the current transfer window. (ANI)
