NEW DELHI - The sports ministry Saturday formed a committee to find ways for the best utilisation of Sports Authority of India (SAI) venues after the Commonwealth Games.
During a visit to five stadia, sports minister Ajay Maken said “the committee consisting of renowned sports persons and veteran sports journalist” has been asked to suggest ways for making the best use of the sporting infrastructure.
The committee will be chaired by the sports secretary Sindhushree Khullar and will comprise former track queen P.T. Usha, footballer Baichung Bhutia, boxer M.C. Marykom, former national hockey captain Dilip Tirkey and veteran sports journalist K. Datta.
“The committee will hold its first meeting on Monday and they have been given four months to submit their recommendations,” said Maken, who visited the SPM Swimming Complex, National Stadium, IGI Complex, Nehru Stadium and Karni Singh Shooting Range.
“The SAI stadiums will be used for only specific purpose. They will be used as academies, hosting national and international tournaments and national team’s practice for the 2012 London Olympics,” he said.
Maken said the sports ministry has decided to hand over three stadiums to New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) for cleaning while two stadia would be maintained by the SAI.
