MADRID — Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol underwent surgery on his left hand after injuring it during practice with Spain’s national team.

The Spanish basketball federation says Gasol will be sidelined for at least three weeks.

The federation says Gasol damaged a ligament in his left index finger when blocking a shot during a practice session Monday.

The federation said in a statement Tuesday that Gasol will have to wear a splint for 20 days.

The statement did not say whether Gasol will be fit to play in next month’s European Championship in Poland, which starts Sept. 7.

Calls to the federation’s headquarters Tuesday went unanswered.
