Green Bay knocks off No. 20 Wisconsin 88-84 in OT

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Bryquis Perine scored 22 points, and Troy Cotton hit a key 3-pointer as Wisconsin-Green Bay beat No. 20 Wisconsin 88-84 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Rahmon Fletcher added 18 points for the Phoenix (9-2), who held off a second-half surge by the Badgers and took control in overtime. Wisconsin-Green Bay students swarmed in the middle of the court — but left their seats a little too early, as referees were putting 1 second back on the clock. After returning to their seats, students retook the court to celebrate.

Trevon Hughes scored a career-high 27 points for the Badgers (6-2) but fouled out in overtime.

Wisconsin jumped into the rankings after knocking off Duke last week. The Badgers came into Wednesday’s game with a 15-0 all-time record against Green Bay.

It was a shaky start to the in-state rivalry portion of the Badgers’ schedule. Wisconsin faces fellow in-state heavyweight Marquette at home on Saturday and plays Wisconsin-Milwaukee later this month.

Green Bay’s Randy Berry opened overtime with an inside score and a pair of free throws, giving the Phoenix a 79-75 lead. Wisconsin’s Jason Bohannon answered with two free throws, but Cotton hit a 3-pointer to put the Phoenix up 82-77 with 2:32 left.

A loose-ball foul put Leuer on the line with 1:54 left, but he only hit one of two free-throw attempts and Green Bay led by 4 with 1:54 left.

Hughes missed inside with 43 seconds left, then fouled out, sending Berry to the line with 40.1 seconds to go. Berry hit one of two, giving Green Bay a 5-point lead.

Leuer was fouled and hit both free throws, cutting the lead to 3, but Evans answered with two free throws of his own. Wisconsin’s Tim Jarmusz then watched as his pass sailed out of bounds with 22.1 seconds left.

Green Bay was in control for much of regulation, leading 59-51 on a 3-pointer by Cordero Barkley with 10:29 remaining in the second half. But Hughes kept the Badgers in the game by consistently driving the lane, getting fouled and going to the free throw line.

Hughes’ 3-pointer cut Green Bay’s lead to 60-57, and two more free throws brought the Badgers within 1.

Bohannon then found Leuer wide open on the baseline for a slam dunk, giving Wisconsin a 61-60 lead with 7:58 remaining — Wisconsin’s first points by a player other than Hughes since the 14:22 mark.

But Green Bay didn’t go away, going on a 9-2 run to retake the lead, 69-63, on a 3-pointer by Fletcher.

Leuer answered with a three-point play to cut Green Bay’s lead to 2. After Berry hit one of two free throws for the Phoenix, Bohannon hit a 3-pointer — his first points of the game — to tie the game at 69.

But Berry went back to the line and hit them both, putting Green Bay up 2 — and Hughes missed two free throws on the other end with 2:53 remaining.

Fletcher hit another two free throws, but Hughes drove for a layup to cut Green Bay’s lead to 2 with 1:53 remaining, then hit another inside shot to tie the game at 73.

Perine missed a 3-pointer, but the ball went out of bounds to Green Bay. Perine drove for a foul on Ryan Evans, and hit both free throws to take a 2-point lead with 25.2 left. Hughes missed a layup but Leuer scored on a putback.

Evans rebounded a miss by Perine but the Phoenix couldn’t get another shot up in time, and the game went to overtime.
