VCU overcomes poor shooting, beats Richmond 65-57

RICHMOND, Va. — T.J. Gwynn scored a career-high 20 points and Bradford Burgess’ key second-half 3-pointers helped Virginia Commonwealth defeat Richmond 65-57 on Saturday night.

The Rams (6-2) held Richmond to two field goals over the final 6:38.

Earlier, VCU was the team who shot poorly from the field, missing 17 of its 22 attempts. The Rams early shooting struggles was due to the tough defense of the Spiders, who are ninth in the NCAA in field goal defense.

Richmond (7-2) led by as many as 12 points in the first half before going into halftime with a 29-20 lead.

But Virginia Commonwealth finally found its touch in the second half, rolling to a 19-4 start to give the Rams a 39-33 lead with 13:43 left. Terrance Saintil scored seven during the rally, as Richmond missed 7 of 8 shots.

After Burgess hit a pair of 3s, he made another to put VCU ahead 60-55 with 47.9 seconds to play.
