Purdue ends skid with win over Illini, 84-78

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — JaJuan Johnson scored 24 points Tuesday night and E’Twaun Moore added 16 to lead No. 13 Purdue past Illinois, 84-78.

The win ended a three-game losing streak that cost the Boilermakers a spot in the top 10.

Purdue (15-3, 3-3) trailed 32-28 at the half. But the Boilermakers opened the second half with a 15-4 run for a 43-36 lead and held on while the Illini charged back.

Illinois closed to within 81-78 with 22 seconds to play. But Robbie Hummel hit three free throws to ice the win.

Demetri McCamey scored 28 points to lead the Illini (12-7, 4-2).

Boilermakers were assessed an unusual technical foul in the first half because they played guard John Hart, who didn’t appear in the official game book. Hart finished with 14 points.
