Webster scores 28 as Blazers top Clippers 109-87
PORTLAND, Ore. — Martell Webster scored 28 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 as the Portland Trail Blazers cruised to a 109-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers a few hours after the teams made a deal Tuesday night.
Webster tied a career high by hitting seven 3-pointers, including four in the first half, to lead the Trail Blazers. Aldridge made nine of 16 shots and grabbed nine rebounds. Andre Miller had 10 points and 12 assists, while Rudy Fernandez scored 15 points.
Portland’s Brandon Roy, who missed 15 games because of a pulled right hamstring, had a mixed performance in his first appearance since Jan. 20. The All-Star guard shot 2 of 7 and scored four points in 15 minutes during the first half, but sat out the second half due to a recurrence of the hamstring injury.
Eric Gordon scored 20 points and Rasual Butler 18 for slumping Los Angeles, which lost its fifth consecutive game, and ninth in 10 games.
Earlier Tuesday, Portland and Los Angeles made a three-player trade in which the Blazers acquired 6-foot-11 center Marcus Camby in exchange for guard Steve Blake and forward Travis Outlaw. Camby was averaging 7.7 points and 12 rebounds a game for the Clippers this season. None of the three played.
Portland controlled a ragged first half, in which both team went long stretches without scoring. Webster hit consecutive 3-pointers to stake the Blazers to an early 16-7 lead. Portland led by as many as 15 midway during the second quarter, and settled for a 49-37 halftime lead.
Webster and Aldridge hit consecutive jump shots midway through the third quarter to help the Blazers increase their lead to 69-48, but the Clippers briefly rallied to cut the deficit to 13 heading into the fourth quarter. Los Angeles pulled to within 79-74, but Portland put the Clippers away with an 11-0 run. The Blazers outscored the Clippers 30-13 during the final 8:48.
