American U. edges Navy 80-77 in double OT
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Vlad Moldoveanu had 19 points and scored the go-ahead layup as American University defeated Navy 80-77 in double overtime on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (9-19, 6-7 Patriot League) overcame a five-point deficit in the second overtime with 3:16 left. Moldoveanu scored with 15 seconds remaining, then Daniel Munoz hit two free throws with 7 seconds left. Navy’s Jordan Sugars missed a 3-point attempt with 3 seconds to go and American, which was 6-for-6 from the line in the final 2:49, swept the season series.
Stephen Lumpkins added 21 points and 11 rebounds for American.
The Midshipmen (13-15, 7-6) trailed by 12 early in the second half, but rallied to force overtime on O.J. Avworo’s three-point play.
The first overtime was tied twice. Sugars hit a jumper with 2 seconds to go, but Joe Hill tied it at the buzzer.
Chris Harris scored 30 and Sugars had 25 for Navy.
