Virginia suspends Landesberg for rest of season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia has suspended top scorer Sylven Landesberg for the rest of the season for failing to meet his academic obligations, the school said.

Coach Tony Bennett made the announcement Saturday about an hour before the Cavaliers took an eight-game losing streak into their regular-season finale against No. 22 Maryland.

Virginia (14-14, 5-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) has struggled mightily since an eight-game winning streak earlier in the season. The Cavaliers have lost 10 of 12 games since.

Landesberg was the ACC’s top rookie last season, and leads the Cavaliers with averages of 17.3 points and 2.9 assists this season. He’s played a team-high 32 minutes per game.
