Hofstra promotes Welsh’s assistant to head job

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Hofstra has promoted assistant Mo Cassara to head coach just two days after Tim Welsh resigned following his DWI arrest.

Welsh resigned a month after he was hired to succeed Tom Pecora, who left for Fordham. Welsh hired a staff that included Cassara, who spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Boston College.

Hofstra president Stuart Rabinowitz announced Wednesday that Cassara agreed to a multiyear contract, although no details were given. Welsh, who worked as an analyst for ESPN the last two seasons, signed a five-year contract worth $3 million.

The 49-year-old Welsh was arrested the morning of April 30. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and his next appearance in district court was adjourned to June 1.
