Vizquel matches idol Aparicio on hits list
CLEVELAND — Omar Vizquel has equaled his boyhood idol.
The Chicago White Sox infielder tied Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio for the second-most hits by a shortstop Monday night. Vizquel’s single in the fifth inning against the Indians was his 2,674th career hit, matching Aparicio, who allowed his No. 11 to be unretired this season by the White Sox so Vizquel, a fellow Venezuelan, could wear it.
Vizquel received a nice ovation from the Cleveland crowd. He was wildly popular during 11 seasons with the Indians.
Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees entered Monday with 2,782 hits, the most among shortstops.
