Monier wins Giro stage; Arroyo Duran leads overall
PEIO TERME, Italy — French rider Damien Monier won the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia with an attack on the climb to the finish Wednesday, while Spain’s David Arroyo Duran held on to the overall race lead.
Monier, who rides for Cofidis, attacked about two miles from the line to complete the 107-mile ride from Brunico to Peio Terme in 4 hours, 29 minutes and 19 seconds. It was Monier’s first stage victory on a major tour.
Danilo Hondo of Germany overtook Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk down the stretch for second. The pair had broken away with Monier with about three miles left, but failed to keep up the pace as the Frenchman broke clear.
Arroyo Duran retained the leader’s pink jersey with a total time of 73 hours, 11 minutes and 38 seconds.
