Wittels streak reaches 55, but Texas A&M wins 17-3
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Florida International’s Garrett Wittels extended his hitting streak to 55 games, one of the few mistakes Texas A&M pitcher Barret Loux made as the Aggies beat the Golden Panthers 17-3 on Friday in the opening game of the Coral Gables Regional.
Adam Smith, Joe Patterson, Matt Juengel and Brodie Greene all homered and drove in three runs apiece for the Aggies (41-19-1). Kevin Gonzalez also homered for Texas A&M, which got a season-high 20 hits.
Loux (11-2) gave up six hits and struck out 10 in eight innings.
Wittels finished 1 for 4 and moved within three games of matching Robin Ventura’s Division I record 58-game hitting streak with a sixth-inning double for FIU (36-24). Jabari Henry hit a pinch-hit solo homer for the Golden Panthers.
