Coastal Carolina finds stroke to beat Stony Brook

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Coastal Carolina finally looked like one of the country’s best teams, knocking around Stony Brook to remain alive in the Myrtle Beach Regional with a 25-7 victory Sunday.

The Chanticleers (53-8) lead Division I in victories and are seeded fourth overall at the NCAA tournament. But it took until their third regional game to show it as Coastal got 25 hits, including their first three homers in NCAA play.

The Chants face College of Charleston later Sunday to remain alive. Stony Brook, the America East Conference champs, ended its season 30-27.

Coastal Carolina took control with a 10-run fourth, which featured the team’s first two homers. Jose Iglesias and Rico Noel hit two-run homers during the surge. Chance Gilmore added a two-run shot in the sixth for the Chants, who hit 11 homers during last week’s Big South tournament.
