CHICAGO — Chicago White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a detached muscle in the back of his right shoulder.

Peavy had to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Angels in the second inning after delivering a pitch. A former Cy Young Award winner with the San Diego Padres, Peavy is 7-6 with a 4.63 ERA in 17 starts this season.

There was no immediate word on how long Peavy might be out, but it is a blow to a red-hot White Sox team that had won 20 of its previous 25 games through Tuesday. Peavy was 3-2 with a 1.67 ERA in his previous six starts as the White Sox overcame a poor start to make a run at the top of the AL Central.

Peavy pitched through a sore shoulder last month and said Tuesday night he didn’t know if that was connected to the latest problem. With two outs in the second Tuesday, Peavy delivered a 2-2 pitch to the Angels’ Mike Napoli and then jumped off the mound and raised his right arm before walking straight to the dugout with team trainer Herm Schneider.

Peavy was 9-6 with a 3.45 ERA with San Diego and Chicago last season when he was limited to a career-low 16 starts due to a strained tendon in his right ankle. He went 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three outings with the White Sox after being on the DL for nearly three months.

He was dealt to the White Sox at the trade deadline nearly a year ago. The Padres got four young pitchers in the deal — Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.

The White Sox filled Peavy’s roster spot by recalling right-hander Jeffrey Marquez from their Triple-A farm club at Charlotte.
