Durgesh Kumar wins fifth silver for India in Youth Olympics

SINGAPORE - Athlete Durgesh Kumar won silver for India in the 400m hurdles final at the inaugural Youth Olympics here Monday.

It was India’s second medal in the athletics event and pushed the overall medal’s tally to six with five silvers and a bronze. Discus thrower Arjun had won a silver Saturday.

Durgesh won the silver with a personal best timing of 50.81 secs at the Bishan Stadium. Cuban Norge Sotomayor Lara won the gold clocking 50.69 secs and Kenyan William Mbevi won the bronze with 51.23 secs.

It was the lone good news for the India on a day when shooters and the basketball team disappointed.

Ruchi Singh came sixth in the 10m air pistol girls final while the boys basketball team lost to hosts Singapore 17-20 in a round robin match.

Boxer Vikas Krishnan will face Daniel Echeverria of Mexico in the men’s 60 kg category for the bronze medal clash Tuesday.
