Asian, Para games to cost China $18 bn

BEIJING - The Asian Games and the Asian Para Games to be held in China’s southern Guangzhou City later this year will cost about 122.6 billion yuan ($18.37 billion), Xinhua reported Thursday.
The figure was revealed by Guangzhou city mayor Wan Qingliang Wednesday.
Construction of metro system, roads and water treatment projects, among others, for the games accounted for 109 billion yuan ($16.33 billion), he said.
About 6.3 billion yuan ($944 million) will be spent on the Games’ 70 venues, of which 12 are new. Fifty-eight existing buildings have been modified or expanded.
About 7.3 billion yuan ($1.09 billion) will be spent on the Games’ operation, Wan said.
The Asian Games will start Nov 12. A total of 10,156 athletes from 45 Asian countries will compete in 476 events in 42 different sports during the 15-day event.
The Asian Para Games will start Dec 12.
